Sendak of the collection on display at Rosenbach
The Rosenbach’s Maurice
Sendak Gallery moves to a new stage
Experience the classic REALLY ROSIE and other original artwork
Opening November 23rd – Spring 2008
The Rosenbach Museum & Library
celebrates the work of Maurice Sendak – author of such beloved
children’s classics
as Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and Outside
Over There – with the relocation of
the Sendak Gallery, to a larger exhibition space in the Rosenbach’s
Maurice Sendak Building. The gallery will open in its new space
on Friday, November 23rd with Really Rosie, a new exhibition exploring
Sendak’s collaborative project with singer-songwriter Carole
King.
In 1975, Sendak’s words and
illustrations came to life with the television debut and musical
adaptation of some of his earlier tales for children, such as The
Sign on Rosie’s Door, Chicken
Soup with Rice, Pierre, and Alligators All Around. Led by the theatrical
Rosie and starring the
Nutshell Kids, the televised special led to a songbook and recordings
with King voicing the title
character, as well as later opera and musical productions. Original
artwork – including Sendak's
largest drawing at over 9' x 11' (on view for the first time),
animation cels, musical scores,
manuscripts, film and video, playbills, and posters featuring Rosie – will
be on view.
Following Really Rosie in May 2008, the museum will present There’s
a Mystery There: Sendak
on Sendak, a major retrospective presented in four of the museum’s
gallery spaces and
showcasing the largest repository of Sendak’s work in the
world, held by the Rosenbach.
The Rosenbach Museum & Library is located at 2008-2010 Delancey
Place and is open Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults,
$5 for students and seniors, and free for children under 5. For
more information, please call (215) 732-1600 or visit www.rosenbach.org.

One of the most
famous creators of contemporary children's books, Maurice Sendak
has
authored and illustrated 84 books in a career spanning nearly six
decades. The themes and
illustrations that characterize Sendak's work have challenged the
norms of children's literature
over time and continue to entrance both children and adults to
this day. His innovative techniques and honest portrayal of childhood
emotion are celebrated worldwide and have earned him several prestigious
honors, including the Caldecott Book Medal (1964), the international
Hans Christian Andersen Medal (1970), the National Medal of Arts
(1996), a Library of Congress "Living
Legend" medal (2000), and the Astrid
Lindgren Memorial Award for Literature (2003).
Really Rosie is curated
by the Rosenbach’s Karen Schoenewaldt
and Judith M. Guston.
